About Martin

Martin’s path to master silversmith has been a lifetime commitment.

Schooled in the UK, Martin showed a natural flare for art, design and photography from a young age, following this interest in enrolling at the Kent Institute of Art & Design. It was here that Martin was introduced to silversmithing and the traditional methods of working precious metals. He had found his craft which quickly became his passion.

Graduating with the title of Best Junior Silversmith in the UK, a prestigious award from the Goldsmiths Craft Council, Martin went on to work for well-known British silversmiths Grant MacDonald, Ian Calvert, Beeby & Powell and Meiling & Gartrell.

In the meantime, young Martin became a father. Impatient with the irregular income of a fledgling artist, he joined the police. And silversmithing became a hobby.

In 2006, Martin immigrated to New Zealand, seeing the move as his opportunity to return full time to the craft of silversmithing. He set up a workshop, dedicating the space to indulging his passion for creating beautiful pieces of art from single sheets of silver and gold.

Now a master of his trade, Martin believes his indirect and unorthodox path to full time silversmith has armed him with patience, understanding, knowledge and compassion. Skills enhanced by experience, and the breath-taking scenery of New Zealand a constant source of inspiration, make a Martin Carroll piece not only beautiful, but also uniquely unusual and a joy to own.
